Evansville Regional Airport (EVV) was established in 1941, and was originally known as Dress Regional Airport. The airport began operations with a single 4,000-foot runway and a handful of hangars. During the 1950s and 60s, the airport’s facilities were expanded to accommodate larger aircraft. A second runway was constructed in 1962, along with the addition of two new hangars. In 1967, the airport changed its name to Evansville Regional Airport to better reflect its community ties.
Throughout the late 1960s and into the 1970s, EVV underwent multiple renovations and additions. In 1974, a new terminal building was built that included four baggage claim areas as well as ticketing counters for multiple airlines. This renovation also included an enlarged parking lot with more than 1,500 spaces for passengers. To further improve service at EVV, additional taxiways were constructed throughout the decade to provide direct access from runways to hangar areas.
In the 1980s and 90s, Evansville Regional Airport continued to grow both in terms of facilities and air traffic services offered. In 1989, an air cargo facility opened at EVV which allowed for greater freight transportation capabilities within the region. Then in 1995 a new control tower was built which provided improved safety measures for both incoming and outgoing flights. Finally in 1998 a new concourse was added providing passengers with seven jet bridges making boarding easier than ever before.
