Everett-Paine Field Airport was originally established in 1936 as the Paine Field Airport and was operated by the Snohomish County government. The airport was initially used for general aviation and military operations, but it wasn’t until 1941 when the U.S. Navy took over the airport and began to expand it that its future as a commercial airport became a reality. In 1941, the Navy began constructing two runways to accommodate larger aircraft, including bombers and transport planes, which were used during World War II. After the war ended in 1945, the airport returned to Snohomish County’s control and was renamed Everett-Paine Field Airport to honor Major General Clarence Paine who had been killed in action during WWII.
In 1956, more expansion took place at Everett-Paine Field Airport with two additional runways being built to accommodate larger aircraft and jet traffic. The airport also saw an increase in passenger traffic over the next few decades thanks to its convenient location just 30 miles north of Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. In 1990, commercial airlines like Horizon Air began operating out of Everett-Paine Field Airport with flights to Portland, Oregon; Spokane, Washington; and Boise, Idaho. Since then, more airlines have been added to serve destinations throughout the United States and Canada including Alaska Airlines, United Express, Delta Connection/SkyWest Airlines, American Eagle/Envoy Air, Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines.
