Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) is a public airport located three miles southwest of downtown Fairbanks in Alaska, USA. It is owned by the State of Alaska and operated by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. The airport serves as a hub for flights to many destinations in Alaska, as well as connecting flights to the lower 48 states and international destinations.
The airport was originally opened in 1951, when it was known as Lathrop Field. It was named after former Fairbanks mayor James W. Lathrop, who had served from 1925-1931. The airport initially served only domestic flights, but in 1959 it was granted permission to operate international flights, with service to Canada beginning shortly thereafter. Over the years, FAI has seen many improvements, including a new terminal building in 1975 and an extension of the main runway in 1997. In 2003, the State of Alaska approved construction of a new terminal building that opened in 2007. This terminal is now one of the busiest airports in all of Alaska, serving over 1 million passengers per year with both domestic and international flights.
