Fargo – Hector International Airport began its history in 1928, when the first airport was built in the area. The original airport was located on the outskirts of Fargo, and served as a refueling station for early airmail flights. In 1941, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) established a new airfield in Fargo, and it became known as Hector Field. During World War II, Hector Field served as a training site for B-17 bomber pilots. After the war ended, commercial airline service returned to Fargo and Hector Field expanded to accommodate larger planes. In 1966, Hector Field was renamed Fargo – Hector International Airport to reflect its international status. The airport underwent further expansion in 1971 with the addition of a new passenger terminal and other facilities. Over the years, additional runways were added to facilitate more flights and improve safety standards. Today, Fargo – Hector International Airport serves over 1 million passengers annually and is one of North Dakota’s busiest airports. It provides direct flights to major cities across the United States as well as international destinations such as Mexico City and Toronto. The airport is located 5 kilometers northwest of downtown Fargo. The best way to get to the airport for drivers coming from outside of the city is Interstate 29. Take I-29 to Exit # 67 and then follow signs to the parking lots.

Passengers arriving by train take the train to Fargo Amtrak Rail Station and then take a taxi from there. Alternatively, you can also take bus route # 13a from the nearby Transit Center to the vicinity of the airport.
