Fayetteville Regional Airport Abbreviation Code

Fayetteville Regional Airport opened in 1928 as a small airstrip known as Drake Field. It was named after local businessman and aviator, Charles Drake, who owned several acres of land near the current airport site. The original runway was 2,500 feet long and 50 feet wide. In the first year of operation, 80 aircraft took off or landed at the airfield. During World War II, the airfield was used for military training purposes and for some commercial flights. After the war ended in 1945, the airfield returned to civilian use and began to grow rapidly. The runway was expanded to 5,000 feet and additional buildings were added to accommodate more passengers. In 1958 it became an official airport with a new name: Fayetteville Regional Airport. Since then, it has continued to expand its services with numerous improvements including a new terminal building in 2003 and additional runways in 2008-2009. Today, Fayetteville Regional Airport serves over 300,000 passengers annually with flights to several destinations across the US and Canada. It is also a popular destination for private planes and helicopters due to its proximity to Fort Bragg Army Base and Pope Field Air Force Base. The airport continues to be an important part of the regional economy, providing jobs for over 500 people throughout Cumberland County.
