Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport Abbreviation Code

Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) first opened on November 4, 1930 as the Green Bay Municipal Airport. The airport was located on a small parcel of land that was donated by the Austin Straubel family, and it was named in honor of their son, Austin Straubel. Initially, the airport consisted of a single gravel runway that measured just over 1,000 feet in length. In 1936, the Works Progress Administration funded an extension to the runway which brought its total length to 3,400 feet. This allowed for larger aircraft to land at the airport and marked a significant milestone in its growth. Throughout the next few decades, additional improvements were made to the facility such as new hangars and a terminal building that could accommodate up to 600 passengers per hour. In 1959, GRB became an international airport following approval from the United States Customs Service. The early 2000s saw further expansion with new air carriers offering service to more destinations and increased passenger numbers reaching one million annually by 2010.
