The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) has been serving the Upstate of South Carolina since 1962. It was originally known as the Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport, and was created due to the increasing need for air travel in the area. The airport was renamed in 1975 after a major renovation project that included a new terminal building and upgraded runways. In 1977, GSP became the first airport in South Carolina to offer international flights to Cancun, Mexico. Since then, GSP has become an important hub for air travel throughout the southeast United States. In addition to being a major hub for domestic air traffic, it has also served as a connecting point for international flights from Europe and other parts of the world. Over recent years, GSP has seen significant growth in passenger numbers and cargo operations. In 2019 alone, it handled over 3 million passengers and over 140 million pounds of cargo – making it one of the busiest airports in South Carolina. The airport is currently served by ten airlines with nonstop service to over 35 destinations across North America and Europe. With its ever-expanding network of services and convenient location to both downtown Greenville and Spartanburg, GSP is an integral part of Upstate South Carolina’s economy and transportation infrastructure.
