Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport Abbreviation Code

Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport began its life as a military airfield in 1941, when the United States Air Force established Keesler Field. It was initially used for training purposes by the 8th Training Group, and also served as a base for anti-submarine patrols during World War II. In 1945, the airfield was closed and returned to local control. The City of Gulfport then purchased the land and re-opened it as Gulfport Municipal Airport in 1947. The airport quickly grew in popularity with both commercial airlines and private aviators, leading to an expansion of facilities and services. In 1959, the airport was renamed Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport to better reflect its regional role. By this time, it had become an important hub for international cargo traffic and had begun offering international flights to destinations such as Mexico City and Havana, Cuba. In 1964, the airport received its current name of Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport after being designated by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an international airport. Since then, it has continued to grow in size and importance as a major transportation hub for both domestic and international travelers. Today, it is home to multiple airlines offering flights around North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Australia.
