It was used by the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, training pilots and gunners to fly B-17 bombers. After the war ended, the airfield was deactivated and eventually transferred to the City of Harlingen in 1949. The city then renamed it Harlingen Municipal Airport and began renovating it for general aviation purposes. By 1956, commercial flights were operating out of HRL with service from both Continental Airlines and Trans-Texas Airways.
