Harrisburg International Airport (HIA) was established in 1947 as the Harrisburg-York Airport. It was originally a small airfield with two runways serving the local area. In the 1950s, it began to expand and by 1960 had three runways, two terminals and several hangars. In 1969, the airport changed its name to Harrisburg International Airport and began to accommodate larger aircraft. By 1975, HIA had added a fourth runway and was handling more than 400 flights a day. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, HIA continued to grow in size and number of flights served, with additional terminal expansions in 1989 and 2000. In 2008, HIA became part of the Susquehanna Valley Regional Airport System (SVRAS), which includes five airports in central Pennsylvania. This allowed for even greater expansion of services at HIA including nonstop flights to major cities within the United States. Today, Harrisburg International Airport is one of Central Pennsylvania’s busiest airports with over 400 daily departures to over 30 destinations across North America. It serves as an important hub for commercial air travel in Pennsylvania as well as providing general aviation services for local businesses and private pilots.
