Islip Airport – Long Island MacArthu began as a World War I airfield in 1919. The airfield was initially known as the Islip Flying Field, and was operated by the United States Army Air Corps. The field was used for military training exercises, and various types of aircraft were tested there. After the war, the airfield was turned over to the local government and renamed Islip Airport. In 1923, it opened for commercial flights operated by Eastern Air Lines and National Airlines. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the airport saw steady growth in passenger traffic and cargo operations. In 1950, Eastern Air Lines began operating nonstop flights from Islip to Miami International Airport.
