Juneau International Airport (JNU) was built in 1942 as part of the U.S. Army’s Alaska Highway project. It was originally a military airfield, but in 1948 it was opened to commercial flights and became the first airport in Juneau. The airport was built on the site of the former Juneau Air Station, which had been established by the U.S. Navy during World War II. In succeeding years, JNU continued to expand its operations and facilities, adding new runways and terminals to accommodate larger aircraft and increased passenger traffic. In 2002, a new terminal building opened at JNU, increasing its capacity and providing modern amenities for travelers including a large food court with several restaurants and retail stores. Additionally, the airport has developed a number of specialized services to better serve its customers such as car rental companies, ground transportation options like shuttle buses and limousines, currency exchange services, and an on-site hotel for travelers on extended stays. In recent years JNU has become an important gateway for tourists visiting Alaska’s capital city as well as those who are connecting to other destinations throughout the United States or abroad. With over 1 million passengers annually now served by JNU it is clear that it has become an integral part of Juneau life for both locals and visitors alike.
