What is BCG?
BCG is the acronym for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, a vaccine against tuberculosis, a very serious disease transmitted by air, and can reach all organs of the body, especially the lungs.
The BCG vaccine began to be tested in 1925, and became known as the first vaccine of the twentieth century. The scientist Albert Leon Charles concluded that in order to immunize people against tuberculosis, it would only be possible to place tuberculous bacilli in their bodies, and he did so, starting with tests on animals, and then with humans.
BCG can be administered from the first month of life of a child, and is not very recommended for adults, ideally it should be done at the infantile age. BCG is best for children under five years of age and for all forms of tuberculosis. This vaccine is also used in HIV positive children who have symptoms of the disease.
