Midland / Odessa International Airport Abbreviation Code

Midland/Odessa International Airport (MAF) is located in Midland and Odessa, Texas. It is owned and operated by the city of Midland, but serves the entire Permian Basin area. The airport was originally constructed in 1940 as an Army Air Corps Base and was used for training during World War II. After the war, it was turned over to the city of Midland and began its life as an airport. In 1960, the airport underwent a major expansion project that included lengthening its runway from 5,000 to 8,000 feet in length. This allowed larger aircraft to use the airport more easily and increased its capabilities significantly. The following decade saw more expansions with a new terminal building being completed in 1971. This terminal was designed to accommodate up to 500 passengers per hour and included a restaurant, gift shop, and other amenities. In 1993, the terminal was again expanded with additional gates added for larger aircraft as well as additional restaurants and shops added for travelers’ convenience. Today, MAF is a busy hub of activity that serves both commercial airline flights as well as private planes from across the region. It has become one of the most important airports in Texas due to its central location in West Texas and proximity to numerous cities within a few hours’ drive or less.
