Missoula International Airport (MSO) began in the early 1920s as a small grass airstrip. By the mid-1930s, the airport had grown to include two paved runways and a few buildings. In 1941, the US Army Air Corps took over operations of Missoula International Airport and improved the infrastructure of the airfield. The Army built four new asphalt runways, a new terminal building, and several hangars for military aircraft. During World War II, Missoula International Airport served as a supply depot for troops stationed in Europe and Asia. After the war ended, control of the airport was transferred back to civilian authorities and commercial airlines began using it as their hub for flights in Montana and Idaho. In 1962, Missoula International Airport was officially designated an international airport by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

In 1978, a new passenger terminal was opened at Missoula International Airport which provided modern amenities such as air conditioning and jet bridges. Over the next two decades, Missoula International Airport underwent further improvements such as extending its longest runway by 500 feet in 1996. The airport also added additional hangars for general aviation aircraft and upgraded its navigation equipment with more advanced technology such as an Automated Surface Observation System (ASOS).

In 2008, Missoula International Airport opened a new control tower to better manage air traffic. Today, Missoula International Airport serves as the main airport for Montana and Idaho with more than 350,000 passengers passing through its gates each year.
