In 1937, a new terminal opened that could accommodate up to 33 aircraft at once, making it one of the first large-scale airports in the country. In 1953, a new air traffic control tower was added which allowed for better air traffic control and safety procedures. During the 1960s and 1970s, several additions were made to improve passenger services such as more gates, improved baggage handling facilities and additional parking garages. In 1984, a major renovation project was completed which transformed the terminal into an international facility with modern amenities such as restaurants, shops and expanded security checkpoints.
