Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is located in Norfolk, Virginia and serves the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The airport opened in 1945 as Norfolk Municipal Airport and was initially used for military operations. In 1952, the airport was renamed Norfolk-Portsmouth Municipal Airport due to its proximity to Portsmouth and Chesapeake cities. In 1962, it was renamed again as Norfolk International Airport after being taken over by the City of Norfolk. The airport underwent a major renovation project in 1989 which included a new terminal building, runway extension and additional parking facilities. ORF is currently served by 12 different airlines offering nonstop service to over 30 domestic destinations and international flights to Canada, Mexico, Europe and the Caribbean. ORF also serves as a hub for cargo carriers such as FedEx Express and UPS Airlines. In 2018, the airport handled more than 4 million passengers making it one of busiest airports in the region.
