Oakland International Airport (OAK) was originally established in 1927 as the Oakland Municipal Airport. It was built on an old airfield that had been used by the United States Army from 1918 to 1920. The first commercial flights began in 1928, and the airport has grown steadily ever since. During World War II, OAK served as a major port for military aircraft, cargo, and personnel. After the war, OAK continued to serve as a regional hub for both passenger and cargo flights. In 1963, OAK opened its new terminal building and became one of the first airports in California to serve international flights.
In 1965, OAK began operating nonstop trans-Pacific flights to Tokyo and other Asian destinations. This began a period of rapid growth for OAK that lasted until the late 1970s when increased competition from San Francisco International Airport led to a decline in service at Oakland International Airport. The airport underwent several changes during this period including the construction of a new runway in 1977 and the renovation of its existing terminals in 1981.
In recent years, Oakland International Airport has seen significant improvements including an update of its international terminal in 1999 and expansion of its domestic terminals in 2006. It now serves more than 12 million passengers annually with over 200 daily nonstop departures to 30 cities around the world. In addition to offering domestic service, Oakland International Airport also serves as a gateway for passengers traveling between Asia and Europe with direct flights from cities such as Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Paris, Amsterdam and Dubai.
