Sky Harbor International Airport has been a major force in the development of Phoenix since its opening in 1928. It was built on a small piece of land located just east of downtown Phoenix, and at the time it was the only airport serving Phoenix. The original airport consisted of two dirt runways, a few hangars, and an administration building. Over the years, Sky Harbor Airport has grown to become one of the busiest airports in the world. In 1964, Sky Harbor underwent its first major expansion with the addition of two new runways and a passenger terminal. This allowed for increased air traffic and larger aircraft to use the airport. In 1979, a third runway was added and Terminal 2 opened for service. The late 1980s saw further expansion with Terminal 3 opening in 1990 and Terminal 4 following in 2002. Today, Sky Harbor International Airport is home to over 40 airlines and serves more than 40 million passengers each year making it one of the busiest airports in North America.
