Pitt-Greenville Airport began operations in 1941 as Greenville Municipal Airport, a joint venture between the city of Greenville and Pitt County. The airport was built to provide a safe and efficient means of air transportation for the citizens of both communities. Initially, it served mainly as a general aviation facility, with no scheduled passenger service. In the 1950s, however, the airport began to offer commercial service, with Eastern Airlines providing direct flights to New York City and other major cities in the northeast. By the mid-1960s, Pitt-Greenville had become an important hub for air travel in eastern North Carolina. The airport underwent several expansions over the years, adding new runways and terminal buildings to accommodate increased demand. Today, Pitt-Greenville Airport is served by several major airlines offering direct flights to destinations throughout the United States and Canada. It is also home to numerous corporate jet charter services that provide private air travel for business customers. In addition to its many facilities for air travelers, Pitt-Greenville also offers flight training services for aspiring pilots. With its convenient location just outside of Greenville’s downtown area and its close proximity to Interstate 95 and US Highway 264, it’s easy to see why Pitt-Greenville has become such an important asset for travelers in eastern North Carolina.
