Acronym

Portland International Airport was first established in the early 1940s, when the United States Army Air Corps began construction of Portland Army Air Base. The base was used to train pilots for combat missions and also served as a refueling station for military aircraft. The base was decommissioned in 1946 and then leased to the Port of Portland for commercial use. The Port of Portland officially opened the airport in 1950 under the name Portland-Columbia Municipal Airport. The airport was renamed Portland International Airport in 1971 due to increased international travel traffic. Over the years, the airport underwent numerous renovations and expansions, including a new terminal building in 1984 and a third runway in 1995. In 1999, PDX (the airport’s three-letter code) became one of only two airports nationwide to receive an FAA certification as a “Green Airport,” recognizing its commitment to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives. Today, PDX is one of the most popular airports on the West Coast with over 17 million passengers passing through each year.

History
