Pueblo Memorial Airport was established in 1928 as a single grass runway and a single hangar. It was built to serve the citizens of Pueblo, Colorado, who were in need of an airport to support their growing aviation industry. The airport was initially known as Pueblo Municipal Airport, but it was renamed in honor of World War I and World War II veterans in 1945. In the years following, the airport saw a number of improvements and expansions, including the construction of additional runways and hangars. By the late 1950s, commercial airline service had been established at Pueblo Memorial Airport. The airport continued to grow throughout the 1960s and 1970s with more hangars being added along with new navigational aids such as an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Non-Directional Beacon (NDB). In addition to these changes, many new buildings were also constructed on site including an administration building and passenger terminal. In 1977, after nearly 50 years of service to the community, Pueblo Memorial Airport became one of only three airports in Colorado that could accommodate jet aircraft. This milestone made it possible for travelers from all over the country to access this convenient hub for their travels.
