Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) has a long and interesting history. It was originally built in 1927 as a means of supporting the growing population of Reno, Nevada and the surrounding area. The airport was initially named Sky Ranch Airport, and it was the first airport in Nevada to offer regularly scheduled air service. In 1941, the airport was renamed Reno-Tahoe Airport, and since then it has been an important transportation hub for the region. In 1960, the airport was designated an international airport due to its proximity to Lake Tahoe, which is located just 40 miles away.
In 1976, Reno-Tahoe International Airport underwent a major renovation project that included construction of a new terminal building and runway extensions. This renovation allowed for more flights to be serviced at RNO and increased its capacity to serve both domestic and international travelers. Since then, RNO has experienced steady growth in passenger numbers each year as more people are attracted to this beautiful region of Nevada. The airport now offers direct flights between Reno-Tahoe International Airport and many major cities throughout the United States as well as international destinations in Canada, Mexico and beyond.
The most recent expansion at RNO took place in 2011 when Terminal A opened with 8 gates designed to accommodate larger aircrafts such as Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s. This new terminal also boasted significantly improved services including free Wi-Fi access throughout the facility, expanded security screening areas with automated screening lanes for faster processing times, additional restaurants and retail outlets, an onsite rental car facility for easy access to ground transportation services upon arrival or departure from RNO .
