Richmond International Airport (RIC) was established in 1927 as Byrd Field Airport. It was the first municipal airport in Virginia and was named after aviator and then-governor of Virginia, Harry F. Byrd. The airport served primarily as a military facility until the late 1960s when the city of Richmond began to invest in it to make it more accessible for commercial flights. In 1972, the name was changed to Richmond International Airport and by 1975, all military operations had been relocated elsewhere.
In the 1980s, RIC began to experience rapid growth due to its strategic location between Washington D.C., Norfolk, and Charlotte. By 1989, RIC had become one of the busiest airports in Virginia with over 1 million passengers each year. Since then, the airport has continued to expand with a new terminal building being built in 1992 and additional runways added in 1998 and 2003 respectively. The airport now serves over 4 million passengers annually with nonstop flights to over 50 domestic destinations as well as international flights to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands. In addition to passenger services, RIC also serves cargo operations with FedEx Express being its largest tenant.
