Amarillo International Airport was established in 1929 when the first hangar was built, and the first passenger flight arrived on August 7th, 1929. The airport was initially called Amarillo Army Airfield and it served as a training base for the United States Army Air Corps. During World War II, more than 10,000 pilots were trained at the airfield. After the war, Amarillo Army Airfield was renamed to Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport in honor of fallen astronaut Rick Husband who died in 2003 during the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
In August of 1996, the airport opened a new terminal and began offering commercial service to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. This marked a major milestone for the airport as it allowed for passengers to fly directly out of Amarillo instead of having to drive to another city. In 2011, American Airlines began offering non-stop flights from Amarillo International Airport to Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. As of 2021, there are several airlines that offer flights from Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport including American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
