The Roanoke Regional Airport was established in 1924 when the City of Roanoke purchased a tract of land to construct an airfield. The first commercial flight departed in 1926 and the airport has since grown to include three runways, air cargo services, a main terminal building, and more than 200 acres of land. In the early years, the airport saw mainly passenger flights to other cities in Virginia and nearby states. It wasn’t until after World War II that the airport began to see an influx of business from larger airlines such as Delta Airlines and United Airlines.
In the 1950s, the airport underwent several renovations including new runways and taxiways as well as an expansion of the terminal building. The 1960s saw another round of renovations with additional parking lots being added, a new control tower being constructed, and several new hangars for private planes. As air travel increased over time, so did traffic at Roanoke Regional Airport with more airlines offering flights to various destinations across the United States. In recent years, Roanoke Regional Airport has seen even further growth with new routes being added to Canada, Mexico and Europe. By 2019, it was estimated that more than one million passengers flew through Roanoke Regional Airport each year.
