South Bend Airport Code

South Bend Airport (SBN) has been an integral part of the South Bend, Indiana area since its opening in 1931. The airport was founded by local business leaders, who wanted to provide air service to the region. The first flights were operated by a small airline called Michiana Airways, which provided service to Chicago, Detroit and other nearby cities. Over the next several decades, the airport grew significantly in size and importance. In 1945, it was designated as an official military airfield during World War II and served as a base for training military pilots. After the war, commercial airlines such as American Airlines began servicing the airport, leading to increased passenger traffic and further growth. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, SBN had become one of the busiest airports in Indiana with over 300 daily flights. During this time period, it housed a U.S Air Force Reserve unit that operated C-130 cargo aircraft out of its runways. In recent years, SBN has undergone numerous renovations and upgrades to accommodate larger aircraft such as Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s. Additionally, its main terminal has been completely renovated with modern amenities including free Wi-Fi access throughout the terminal building and improved baggage handling systems. Today South Bend Airport remains an important part of South Bend’s economy with over 2 million passengers passing through each year on both domestic and international flights.
