Springfield-Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI), located in the capital city of Springfield, Illinois, is the largest commercial airport in the state. The airport was originally built in 1927 and was known as the Capital Airport. It served as a training facility for pilots during World War II and remained open after the war. In 1959, it was renamed Springfield-Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport to honor Abraham Lincoln who served as President of the United States from 1861 to 1865.
The airport underwent a major renovation and expansion project in 2000 which included a new terminal building, parking garage, and control tower. These improvements allowed for an increase in air traffic and were completed at a cost of $65 million. SPI also added two new runways in order to accommodate larger aircrafts, making it one of only six airports in Illinois with two parallel runways.
In addition to serving passengers from Central Illinois, SPI is a hub for several cargo carriers including FedEx and UPS. The cargo carriers fly out of SPI on a daily basis carrying freight to destinations around the world. The airport also serves as home base for several charter airlines providing flights to destinations within the United States and abroad.
In recent years, Springfield-Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport has seen an increase in passenger traffic due to its convenient location close to downtown Springfield and its easy access from Interstate 55. It has become an important economic driver for central Illinois with over 8 million passengers traveling through each year since 2017 making it one of the busiest airports in the state.
