Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) was initially established in 1948, as the Anchorage International Airport. It was built in anticipation of increased air traffic from the military and commercial airlines. The airport was named after Senator Ted Stevens, who served Alaska for over 40 years. Over the course of its history, ANC has grown to become one of the busiest airports in North America. In 2019, it handled nearly 6 million passengers, making it the sixth-busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic.
The airport underwent a major expansion between 2006 and 2014, which included a new international terminal, an expanded concourse with additional gates, and improved runways and taxiways. As part of this expansion project, ANC was also upgraded to accommodate larger aircraft such as Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s. In addition to its passenger facilities, ANC also has a large cargo facility that serves as a regional hub for both domestic and international freight shipments. The cargo facility is capable of handling up to 1 million tons of freight annually. ANC also has a general aviation terminal that provides services for small aircraft operations such as private charters and corporate jets.
