Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) has been serving the Grand Valley since 1925. The airport was originally established as a military training facility and served both the US Army and Navy as a base for pilot training. However, in 1948, the airport was deeded to Grand Junction by the US government and it began to serve civilians. The first commercial flight at GJT took off on May 1, 1949, and service has continued ever since. Over the years, GJT has seen a number of improvements and expansions in order to accommodate larger aircrafts. In 1954, the main runway was extended and widened to 6,000 feet in length. In 1969, a new terminal building opened with four jet bridges for passengers boarding larger aircrafts. This terminal building underwent renovations in 1984 that included new ticket counters, baggage carousels and an expanded concourse area. In 2001, GJT opened a new control tower which allowed for more efficient air traffic control operations. A new baggage claim area was built in 2007 which increased passenger convenience significantly. In 2014, GJT completed another major expansion project that included an additional concourse with additional gates for larger aircrafts as well as expanded parking facilities for both short-term and long-term parking needs of passengers. Today GJT serves over one million passengers annually with nonstop flights to several major cities across the United States such as Denver International Airport (DEN), Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) among others.
