Columbus Metropolitan Airport Abbreviation Code

In 1929, the City of Columbus purchased a property of land in the east side of town to develop into an airport. The airport was named after its founder, Colonel Roscoe Turner. The first commercial flight took place on April 17th, 1929 and the first passenger flight was flown on October 10th, 1930. In 1936, the City of Columbus and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) began a project to expand and modernize the airport. This included adding two new runways, extending existing runways, building new hangars and other facilities for passengers.

The following years saw an increase in passenger traffic due to World War II as well as increased air travel across the United States. The airport continued to grow throughout this time period with more hangars being built as well as an addition of a control tower in 1945. In 1950, the name was changed from Roscoe Turner Airport to Port Columbus International Airport in honor of Christopher Columbus and his discovery of America.

In 1962, Port Columbus International Airport was renamed again and became known as Columbus Metropolitan Airport (CMH). This marked a shift from primarily military use to larger commercial flights with an increase in both domestic and international flights throughout this time period. Over the next few decades CMH underwent many renovations including expansion of its terminals and gates, construction of additional parking lots and parking garages, installation of new technology such as baggage scanners that allowed for faster security screenings for passengers traveling through CMH.
