Bangor International Airport first opened its doors in 1929, when the city of Bangor was still a small, rural community. The airport was then called “Curtis Field” and was primarily used for small private aircraft. In the 1950s, the airport underwent a major expansion and modernization project that included adding runways and a new terminal building. By this time, Bangor had become a regional hub for air traffic as well as an important transportation link to Canada. During the 1960s and 1970s, the airport continued to grow in popularity and importance as airlines began offering regular service to destinations around the country and even some international flights. In 1981, the airport was officially renamed “Bangor International Airport” following its designation as an international air facility by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Over the years, Bangor International Airport has grown into one of Maine’s most important transportation hubs with daily flights to major cities throughout North America. The airport also serves as an important cargo hub for companies shipping goods between Maine and Canada. In recent years, BIA has seen renewed investment with millions of dollars being spent on upgrades to its facilities including new hangars and improved terminal buildings. This investment has allowed BIA to continue providing reliable service for travelers from around the world for more than 90 years.
