Molokai Airport is located on the Hawaiian island of Molokai and has been in operation since 1929. It was originally opened as a private airfield by the Hawaii-based Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company for their own use. The airport was mainly used to transport sugar cane from Molokai to other parts of the island. In 1959, the airport was taken over by the State of Hawaii and became a public airport, providing commercial passenger services for both inter-island and mainland destinations. The airport underwent major renovations in 2003, adding a new runway and terminal building that increased its capacity significantly. It now serves an average of 250,000 passengers per year and offers direct flights to Maui, Honolulu, Hilo, Kona, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco. In addition to passenger service, Molokai Airport also provides air cargo services for domestic and international freight operators. The airport is also home to several general aviation operations such as skydiving operations and flight schools. A variety of aircrafts can be seen at Molokai Airport ranging from small propeller planes to jetliners operated by Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines.
