The Medford-Rouge Valley International Airport has a long and storied history. It was first opened in 1927 as the Medford Municipal Airport, serving the city of Medford and the surrounding Rogue Valley area. Initially, it only had two unpaved runways and a single hangar. It was used primarily for private aviation, but soon began to expand its operations to include commercial flights. In 1940, a new terminal was built to accommodate the increasing number of passengers. This terminal served as the main building until 1965 when a new terminal was constructed that could handle larger aircrafts and increased passenger traffic.
In 1972, the airport officially changed its name from Medford Municipal Airport to Medford-Rouge Valley International Airport. The airport underwent significant renovations in 1990 with the construction of an entirely new terminal and other improvements such as a larger parking lot and additional runways for greater capacity. By this time, it had become one of Oregon’s busiest airports with over 100 daily scheduled flights operated by major airlines such as United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines. In recent years, additional improvements have been made including construction of additional parking garages and more efficient baggage handling systems. Today, Medford-Rouge Valley International Airport continues to serve passengers from all over the world with its modern facilities and extensive flight services.
