Shreveport Regional Airport (SHV) was first established in 1932, when the city of Shreveport created a municipal airport. The airport was initially located east of the city and was named for the nearby Shreveport Army Air Field. It provided an important air service for the city, as well as for nearby towns and villages. In 1941, the airport was moved to its current location on Jewella Avenue and renamed Shreveport Regional Airport. In 1948, a new terminal building was opened at SHV, which included a restaurant and snack bar. The 1950s saw a number of improvements to the airport, including additional runways and taxiways as well as a control tower to monitor air traffic in and out of the airport. By 1960, SHV had become one of the busiest airports in Louisiana with more than 130 aircraft movements per day. In 1971, an expansion project began that added a new runway and terminal building to accommodate larger aircrafts. This project also included an addition to the existing control tower that allowed it to reach up to 200 feet tall.
In 1978, SHV received its first international flight from Mexico City on Mexicana Airlines. This marked an important milestone for Shreveport Regional Airport as it now had the ability to handle international flights in addition to domestic ones. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, SHV underwent several renovations that included new restaurants and shops in addition to modernizing its terminal building with state-of-the-art technology such as digital ticketing displays and automated check-in kiosks. In 2010, Southwest Airlines began offering service from SHV which further increased its popularity among both business travelers and tourists alike. Today, Shreveport Regional Airport is one of Louisiana’s major airports with more than 200 daily departures serving destinations across North America including Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).
