Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BSIA) has been serving the city of Birmingham, Alabama since 1931. It was originally named Birmingham Municipal Airport and was the first publicly owned airport in the state of Alabama. The airport changed its name to Birmingham International Airport in 1952 to reflect the growing number of international flights it was receiving. In 2008, it was renamed Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in honor of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, a civil rights leader and Birmingham native who fought for equality and justice for African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement.
Since then, BSIA has seen tremendous growth and development. It now offers passengers a wide range of services such as full-service restaurants, free Wi-Fi access, shopping options, and even a children’s play area. In recent years, the airport has undergone several major renovations to its runways and terminals which have greatly improved its service offerings and added more convenience for travelers. Additionally, BSIA has added several new airlines to its roster including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines making it easier than ever for people to travel both domestically and internationally from this hub.
