Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport is located in Killeen, Texas and serves the city of Killeen and its surrounding Central Texas area. It is a public use airport owned by the City of Killeen and operated by the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport Board. The airport is located 5 miles east of downtown Killeen and serves as a reliever airport for both Fort Hood Army Base and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The history of the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport dates back to 1941 when it was established as an auxiliary airfield to support the United States Army Air Corps at nearby Fort Hood. The original design consisted of two runways, one 4,000 feet long and one 5,000 feet long. In 1958, a new terminal building was constructed to accommodate commercial flights. Shortly after this, in 1962, the airport was reclassified as a general aviation facility due to its proximity to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
In 1988, the Federal Aviation Administration granted $3 million for upgrades to the airport including runway expansion from 4,000 feet to 6,000 feet and construction of a new control tower. In 1995, the terminal building underwent renovations that included an expanded lobby area with improved seating areas for passengers awaiting flights. A new parking lot was also added with 400 spaces available for travelers. These upgrades allowed for more efficient operations at the airport while also providing more amenities to passengers traveling through it.
