Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) is located in Greensboro, North Carolina, and is the primary commercial airport for the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. PTI was established in the 1920s as a training field for the United States Army Air Corps. In 1940, it was officially designated as a military airfield and named after Major General William C. Lee, who served in World War I and World War II. During World War II, PTI served as a training facility for various units of the United States Army Air Force. After the war ended, PTI was used by various private airlines before eventually becoming a commercial airport in 1969.
In 1971, PTI began offering nonstop flights to New York City and Atlanta; since then it has expanded its services to other cities throughout the U.S., including Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles. In addition to these domestic locations, PTI also offers international flights to Toronto and Cancun through Delta Air Lines and Sun Country Airlines respectively. The airport currently serves over 1 million passengers each year with an average of 65 daily departures to 15 different destinations across the U.S., Canada and Mexico; making it one of North Carolina’s busiest airports. The airport has also seen significant growth over recent years with over $500 million invested in improvements since 2000 alone; including expansion of its terminal building and runway upgrades that better accommodate larger aircrafts such as those operated by Delta Air Lines’ regional jets program

The airport, which opened in 1927, is located on the north-western outskirts of Greensboro. The best way to get to the airport for drivers coming from outside of the city is Interstate 40. Take I-40 to Exit # 210, then follow signs to the airport on 68 State Road. Passengers entering Greensboro from the north on US Highway 220 should turn right onto Wendover Avenue and then right again at the first cross street onto Benjamin Parkway. This will then become Joseph M. Bryan Blvd. and leads directly to the airport.
Passengers arriving by train take the train to Greensboro Amtrak Rail Station on East Washington Street and then use the airport shuttle operated by the bus operator PART, which also offers this service daily from High Point and Winston-Salem.
