Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FYI) was established in June of 1928. It began as a single runway airport and was initially used by the United States Army Air Corps. The airport was expanded in the 1930s and 1940s to accommodate larger aircraft, including commercial flights. In 1954, the airport was officially named Fresno Yosemite International Airport in honor of the nearby Yosemite National Park. The airport continued to see expansion over the following decades, with new runways and terminals being built to accommodate more passengers and air traffic. In 2003, a new control tower was constructed to improve air traffic control operations. Additionally, a new international terminal opened in 2006, allowing for direct international flights from FYI for the first time. Today, FYI serves as an important hub for domestic and international travel throughout California’s Central Valley region and beyond.
