Muskegon County Airport (MKG) was established in 1927 as an emergency landing field for aviators. It was built on a plot of land donated by local farmers and included a single grass runway. In the following years, the airport grew in popularity with commercial pilots and eventually became an official airport in 1941. The airport saw its first major expansion in 1945, when an additional runway was added to accommodate larger aircraft. This runway was made of concrete and allowed for night operations. Following this, the airport saw many more expansions over the next few decades, including the addition of a new terminal building, a control tower and more hangars for aircraft storage. The most recent expansion occurred in 2018 when a new taxiway was added to further improve safety standards at MKG. Today, Muskegon County Airport is home to both commercial and private aviation activities, serving thousands of passengers each year from all across Michigan.
