Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport (LBB) was first established as a military base in 1927. The airport was named after Lubbock native and former United States Senator, Preston Smith. In the 1940s, the airfield was used by the United States Air Force for training purposes during World War II. After the war, it was converted into a commercial airport and officially opened in 1952.
