What is IE?
ie is the abbreviation for id est, a Latin expression.
This abbreviation is very common in English, and there are others that are also well known, such as eg “exempli gratia”, which means “for example”; “et cetera”, which is “better known”.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these terms were written in extenso, currently the abbreviated form is more common, and eg is widely used in the English language.
Example: “The teaching-learning process, when focused on adult education, needs to take into account meaningful learning, involving the action of the subject, ie, active learning or self-learning.”
IE and EG
Unlike the ie, which is used to give explanations or contextualizations about something that has been said, the eg serves to give examples on a certain subject or word present in the text.
Example: “Do not forget to buy meats (eg fish, cow, pork, chicken).
