Bellingham International Airport (BLI) is located in Whatcom County, Washington, just south of the Canadian border. It was first established as a military airfield in 1942 during World War II. The U.S. Army Air Corps operated the base until 1945 when it was decommissioned and turned over to the City of Bellingham. In 1946, the City renamed the airfield Bellingham Municipal Airport. The airport was used mainly for general aviation and charter flights until the mid-1970s when commercial service began with Horizon Air operating flights to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).
In 1978, a new terminal building opened to serve commercial passengers and by 1981, BLI had become an international airport with service to Vancouver International Airport (YVR). In 1987, a major expansion project began which included construction of a new runway and terminal building. The new facilities opened in 1991 and allowed for larger aircraft operations at BLI as well as more efficient passenger processing through customs. The airport has seen continued growth since then with more airlines offering service to destinations across North America. Today, Bellingham International Airport is served by five airlines offering nonstop flights to 15 cities throughout Canada and the United States.
