Charlotte Douglas International Airport Code

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is located in Charlotte, North Carolina and is the sixth busiest airport in the world. It is owned by the City of Charlotte and operated by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Airport Authority. The airport was originally established in 1935 as Charlotte Municipal Airport, but it was renamed Douglas Municipal Airport in 1954 after aviation pioneer Ben E. Douglas. The airport’s growth began to accelerate in the 1950s when it became a hub for Eastern Air Lines and Piedmont Airlines. In 1982, Charlotte Municipal Airport officially became known as Charlotte/Douglas International Airport after being designated an international airport by the FAA.

The airport has seen a massive expansion since its inception, with its passenger numbers growing from just over 1 million in 1990 to more than 44 million passengers today. The airport has also gained prominence on the international stage, hosting flights from over 70 airlines servicing more than 180 destinations around the world. In addition to passenger services, CLT serves as a major cargo hub for UPS and FedEx Express and is home to an extensive network of private aviation operators. The airport underwent a major renovation project beginning in 2006 that saw significant improvements to terminal facilities, runways, taxiways and ramp space. This project was completed in 2013 at a cost of $2 billion and resulted in CLT being named one of Air Transport World’s “Most Improved Airports” for 2013-2014.
