The Colorado Springs Airport has a long and vibrant history that dates back to the early 1920s. In 1923, the first airport was built, located on what is now known as Peterson Air Force Base. The airfield was used by the U.S. Army Air Corps for training and it quickly became an important hub for military aviation activities in the region. During World War II, the airport expanded significantly as it became a major training center for military pilots. In addition to its military use, Colorado Springs Airport also served as a commercial airfield during this period with regular passenger flights to Denver and other destinations around the country. After World War II ended, the airport continued to grow and expand with additional runways being constructed and new services being added such as air cargo operations and air ambulance services. By the late 1950s, Colorado Springs Airport had become one of the busiest airports in Colorado with more than 100 daily departures from its two runways.
In 1964, construction began on what would become one of the most significant projects in airport history: a new terminal building that would be able to accommodate up to 500 passengers at any given time. This new terminal opened in 1966 and featured modern amenities such as restaurants, gift shops, lounges and even a hotel on-site. Over time, additional features were added including expanded parking facilities and an automated baggage system which made it easier for travelers to move through the airport quickly and efficiently. Today, Colorado Springs Airport serves over two million passengers each year making it one of Colorado’s busiest airports behind Denver International Airport (DIA).
