Daytona Beach International Airport began as a small airstrip in the early 1920s, located on the south side of the Halifax River. It was initially used by local pilots and passengers to fly to nearby destinations such as Jacksonville and St. Augustine. In 1926, it was officially recognized as an airport when it was designated by the city of Daytona Beach as an official landing site for airmail service from Miami. The airport continued to grow and expand over the next several decades, with additional runways being added and more hangars constructed. During World War II, the airport provided a vital link for military personnel travelling to and from Europe and North Africa. After the war ended, commercial flights started operating out of Daytona Beach International Airport in 1948 with National Airlines becoming its first carrier. Over time, more airlines began using Daytona Beach International Airport as their hub for flights throughout Florida and beyond. Today, Daytona Beach International Airport serves millions of passengers each year and is home to many major airlines including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
