The history of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) dates back to the early 1920s, when it was opened as a small airfield. The airport was initially used for military training during World War II, and afterwards it was converted into a commercial airport in 1945. In 1953, the airport underwent a major expansion which included the addition of two new runways and an upgraded terminal. This expansion allowed for larger aircrafts to land at FLL, thus increasing the number of passengers who could travel through the airport.
In the 1960s, FLL continued to expand by introducing flights to and from Europe and Latin America. During this time, a new runway was also constructed that allowed for bigger planes such as jumbo jets to land at FLL. The development of new technology during this period also enabled aircrafts to take off and land faster than before. In addition, FLL began offering more amenities such as an international terminal which opened in 1978 and a cargo terminal which opened in 1997.
FLL has continued to grow over the years with more airlines providing services such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, British Airways etc., while also adding more amenities such as restaurants and shops inside the terminals. On December 17th 2012, FLL broke its all-time record by having 1 million passengers arrive or depart from its gates within one day’s time frame. This demonstrates just how much FFL has grown since its inception in 1945 and how far it has come since then.
