Huntsville International Airport was established in 1967, following the closure of the former Redstone Arsenal Airport. The airport is owned and operated by the City of Huntsville and serves more than one million passengers each year. Originally, it had a single runway and a small terminal building. Over the years, it has been expanded to include two runways, a modern terminal building with six gates, an international arrivals facility, and several other amenities. The Huntsville International Airport is the main air transport hub in the district of Madison County, which in turn is located in the far north of the state of Alabama, on the border with Tennessee.

Location
The airport is located approximately 14 kilometers southwest of downtown Huntsville, just off Interstate 565 towards Mooresville. Drivers coming from outside the city drive from Huntsville on the I-565 to exit # 7, from where the further route to the airport is signposted.
