Indianapolis International Airport (IND) was established in 1931, when the city of Indianapolis purchased a 640-acre parcel of land from the estate of Charles von Weber. The land was used to construct a small airfield, which housed two runways and two hangars. Over the next few decades, Indianapolis International Airport underwent several expansions as it grew to accommodate the increasing numbers of flights and passengers. In 1953, IND opened its first terminal building with 10 gates and a large central concourse. The terminal was built with an eye towards accommodating larger aircrafts and enabling the airport to handle more flights.

Throughout the 1960s, Indianapolis International Airport continued to expand with additional runways and gate capacity being added. In 1968, IND opened its second terminal building which included a total of 21 gates and over 200,000 square feet of space for passengers. This expansion allowed for more flights as well as an increase in international service at IND. A third terminal building was constructed in 1988 and featured an expanded concourse area with 25 gates along with new amenities such as shops, restaurants, and lounges.

The late 1990s marked another period of growth for Indianapolis International Airport with new cargo facilities being added to support FedEx Express operations at IND. In 2008, IND unveiled its largest expansion project yet—the Col. H Weir Cook Terminal Building—which features 44 gates spread across three concourses along with over 400,000 square feet of space for passengers. This expansion has enabled IND to accommodate larger aircrafts such as Boeing 747s while also providing additional amenities such as free Wi-Fi access throughout the entire airport complex.

Location
The airport, which opened in 1931, is located at the end of the Sam Jones Expressway, approximately 12 kilometers southwest of downtown Indianapolis. It can currently not be reached via this, but only via Interstate Highway # 70 at exit 68.

The “IndyGo” Downtown-Airport Express and route # 8 run regularly between the airport and Downtown or the Amtrak Railway Station. You can find out the current departure times on site. There is also a regular shuttle bus service between the airport and some cities in the vicinity, such as Champaign / Urbana in Illinois, Bloomington or Lafayette.
