Albert J. Ellis Airport (OAJ) is located in Jacksonville, North Carolina and is owned by the Onslow County Airport Authority. The airport was originally built by the United States Navy in 1941. It was named Camp Davis Field and was used as a training facility for pilots during World War II. In 1945, the airfield was decommissioned and turned over to Onslow County. The county renamed it Albert J. Ellis Airport after Albert J. Ellis, a former state senator from Onslow County who had died earlier that year.
In the 1950s, Albert J. Ellis Airport underwent several renovations and expansions to accommodate commercial airlines and military personnel traveling to nearby Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. In 1962, Delta Air Lines began providing passenger service to the airport with three daily flights to Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout the years, other airlines such as Piedmont Airlines (now US Airways), Air South (now part of American Airlines), USAir Express (now part of American Airlines) and Continental Express (now part of United Airlines) provided service to OAJ as well.
In 2003, a new terminal building opened at Albert J. Ellis Airport which features several amenities including food concessions and retail stores such as Hudson News and The Coffee Beanery, as well as free Wi-Fi access throughout the terminal building. In addition to passenger services, OAJ also offers cargo services through FedEx Express and UPS Airlines with both domestic and international destinations available for freight shipments via these carriers.
